Three levels of comprehension question
| Level | What students do | Example question |
|---|---|---|
| Literal (right there) | Find information stated in the text | Where did Maya find the kitten? |
| Inferential (think and search) | Connect details to work something out | Why do you think Maya kept the kitten a secret? |
| Evaluative (on my own) | Give an opinion and support it with the text | Was Maya right to hide the kitten? Use one detail to explain. |
A balanced worksheet has roughly half literal questions for younger or newer readers, and more inferential and evaluative ones as students get stronger.
How long should the passage be?
- Kindergarten to Grade 1: a few sentences, often read aloud together.
- Grades 2–3: one or two short paragraphs.
- Grades 4–5: up to a page, with a heading or two.
- Middle and high school: a page-length excerpt, article or primary source.
These are rough guides, not rules — match the text to your students' reading level rather than their grade alone.
Tips for better comprehension worksheets
- Number the paragraphs so students can cite where they found an answer.
- Ask students to underline the evidence for at least one answer.
- Pre-teach two or three hard words with a vocabulary box at the top.
- End with one question that asks for a personal connection or opinion.
- Use your own texts or ones you have the right to copy; don't paste whole copyrighted books.

Questions
How many questions should a reading comprehension worksheet have?
Five to eight is usual for one passage: a few literal questions, two or three that need inference, and one that asks for an opinion backed by the text.
Can I make a comprehension worksheet from my own text?
Yes. Open the reading comprehension template, paste your passage into the passage box and replace the questions.
Does the AI write the passage too?
Yes. Type a topic and grade and it writes a short passage, eight questions and six vocabulary words. Always read it through before giving it to students.
Do the worksheets come in A4?
Yes, worksheets come in US Letter and A4.
