Give every student an award that's specific to them. A list of 25 different awards takes time, so start from the table above and add one line about what the student actually did: “for reading 40 books this year”.

What to write on a student award

  • Award title: Certificate of Achievement, Student of the Month, or the award name itself.
  • Student's name, the largest text after the title.
  • What it's for, in one line.
  • Class or school name, date, and your signature.

When to give awards

  • End of term or school year, at a class celebration or assembly.
  • Student of the week or month.
  • Reading challenges, attendance, sports days, science fairs and competitions.
  • Graduation from preschool, kindergarten or primary school.

Printing

  • Certificates come in US Letter landscape (11 × 8.5 in) and A4 landscape.
  • Card stock or parchment-style paper makes them feel special; check your printer's maximum paper weight.
  • Print one test copy before the whole class.

Make it fair

  • Keep a class list and tick students off as you write their award, so nobody is missed.
  • Avoid awards that compare students or could embarrass someone (“Most talkative”).
  • Present awards to everyone in the same way, at the same event.

For homeschool families

Certificates mark the end of a curriculum, a reading challenge or a project for homeschooled children too. Use the same steps with one name, or a co-op group's list.
